Learning to catch a story

How to hear a story

Enid and Betty practise their interview skills at the Oral History Training Day led by Dr Michelle Winson from the University of Sheffield. We were proud to take away our certificates from the British Library Society and can’t wait to get out there with our recorders. The most useful tips we learned were to use a timeline structure (start young and let the interviewee remember changes and events when growing up), and to frame wide general questions at the beginning of the interview and gradually zoom into focus on our predetermined theme. An excellent day which has given us lots more confidence in our quest for treasured memories.
